Wow, you dont sound like a college professor in real life! Im sure now that you guys start to head back to the four corners of America (and the world!), there will be an opportunity to relive CPW through the various guest blogs that would undoubtedly be popping up over the course of the next few days. But I just want to say something. In a word, you guys are awesome. Meeting so many of you over the course of this weekend at random events seeing how you all hail from OH, PA, VA, MD, HI, NY, MA, CA, NJ, MI, SC, GA, TX, MO, WA (just to name a few) and getting to know your passions in high school, from research (I dont know how many ISEF and Siemens people Ive talked to these few days) to violin to scuba diving to volunteering to a passion for languages to butterfly collectingit all had been wow. I am now convinced of the statement by Admissions that they are excited about this class. You guys are truly one group of accomplished people that blows my mind away. As you undoubtedly now begin to ponder your college choices and attend other colleges admit weekends (I know Princeton is next week, and Stanford the week after), I hope you have a good time exploring other college campuses (though, youre not allowed to have a better time than you did at MIT =p) in making an informed decision about where to spend the next four years of your life. But theres something you should know. One of the questions that kept on popping up over the weekend was, How much of MIT Blogs is real? Why does it always look like you guys are having a good time? MIT Blogs are real. We dont try to give you a sugered version of what MIT is like. This is real stuff. Granted, we dont always blog about our stress during the weekdays when were up tooling all night nor do we blog about the anguish of failing an exam, but hey, thats just something that comes with the rigorous, well-renowned scientific training that MIT offers. Yes, we do get stressed out at times, but we also know how to enjoy life when were not doing coursework (and there are too many blogs to that effect, so Im not going to bother linking them all). :) We hate MIT at times for keeping us up at 4 or 5 in the morning, but we love MIT for all the possibilities it offers diversity, excitement, enthusiasm, research, and a healthy dose of quirkiness, to name a few. This is why IHTFP stands for two things. This is why my EC interviewer reflects nostalgically upon her time at MIT. This is why we come together during CPW and Orientation to show you what MIT has to offer. A lot of people are wary of the statement that CPW is fake you guys are just getting this together for us, but its not like this during the school year. True we might not be having like 600 different events every single weekend, but were trying to give you a cross-section of MIT culture, to attempt to show you everything that you can possibly be involved in at MIT. We might not always be having barbecues, roofdeck parties, and pancakes at 2 in the morning, but theyre all there. Were not trying to bribe you. Were welcoming you to MIT. On Saturday, a prefrosh asked me, If you could pick only one thing that you love about MIT, what is it, and why? I said, The people. Definitely the people. What makes MIT so amazing is the excitement and the enthusiasm thats present across all facets of the Institution. Such factors play a very important role in improving a teams performance. The team leaders of a team play a very important role, as they are the ones who have the responsibility of encouraging and motivating the team for higher level of performance. However, team members should also have the inner motivation to work for meeting the common goal and target of the team. In a health care system, if team members participate in group workings, they may feel less stressed and this may help in increasing their stay at the workplace. As a care worker, it is important that each one of us have good communication with other team members. This allows high level of social support amongst the team members. Maintaining positive attitude towards work and towards each other in the team, increases cooperation wi th others in the team (Aveyard and Sharp 2013). Barriers to efficient team performance: The two most common barriers to effective team performance are: Poor Planning Poor Leadership Poor Planning: The kind of role one plays within a team does not matter, one has to take time to plan what exactly they want to do. As a care worker, it is always expected from us to provide effective care and support to people, hence it is very important for us to plan our work according to the tasks we have on each day. Poor Leadership: No matter how capable a team may be, unless the team is guided by a dedicated and knowledgeable person, it will be tough for a team to achieve their goals. If the leader cannot lead properly, the team will not be able to follow. This will lead to confusion and ambiguity within the team members. He practiced this at the risk of sending his wife out of his own home when the latter insisted that she was a member of â€Å"untouchables†. Gandhi did not like this thought and the Indian custom. Gardner (1999, p. 128) said that leaders have a good intrapersonal sense – â€Å"a keen awareness of their own strengths, weaknesses, and goals – and they are prepared to reflect regularly on their personal course.† Another trait of a leader is self-awareness. In his confrontation with his wife about the latrine issue, Gandhi was examining his conscience. He had some weaknesses and strength. But he knew he could draw some strength from his wife who had always been there. From this time on, he learned to understand himself, his mood and behavior and how he could affect others. He was outgoing and gregarious, convincing the people not to obey the laws of the British, but not to fight violence with violence. He was an effective leader in the truest sense of the word. Bass (1990) defines transformation leadership to include â€Å"charisma, inspiration, individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation’ (Friedman, p. 9). But Sashkin (1988) also includes vision in this kind of leadership. Trice and Beyer (1991) argue that charismatic leaders are founders of an organization while transformational are members who want to effect change. Burns (2003, p. 24) attributes change to transactional leadership, but transformational is a different concept at all. Conclusion The political climate, the tense atmosphere, and the people in need of a leader made Gandhi effective. Additionally, the external and internal environment coupled with the characteristic traits of Gandhi made his leadership very effective. Gandhi was emphatic and stressful in his words. He was a gifted writer. He was a lawyer; he k new what he was talking about. His style and behavior motivated the people to follow him; the British too felt the Indians were becoming stronger. The British rulers respected Gandhi and looked up to his ways. They knew he was not an ordinary leader. And they were beginning to feel Gandhi and the people of India were united for one cause. NE and Chessapeake DBQ essays The victory over the Spanish Armada left England with a window of opportunity to explore the unchartered New World. Many set off to sea in search of a future unknown. As a result of this opportunity, English settlement of the North America became inevitable in the late 1500s and early 1600s. By the 1700s, there were two prominent colonies in the New World, New England, and the Chesapeake Region. Both of the colonies were English in origin, however, the similarities ended there between the two. In fact, the New England and Chesapeake colonies were the opposite of each other for a variety of reasons. By analyzing the reasons for colonization, the colonists actions, leaders and governments, and religious beliefs, the two colonies become two distinct and different societies. The seed of difference between the New England and Chesapeake regions was planted in their respective reasons for settlement and colonization. The Chesapeake region was colonized for economic reasons. The charter for the Chesapeake area was given to the London Company in England by Charles I. The London Company gathered an array of people, consisting of all males either rich or poor. These colonists slowly ventured to the New world in search of profit and gold, an absolute get-rich-quick scheme. (Document F) Eventually, more people were brought over to colonize, but hardly ever women. In a 1635Virginia-bound ship, the ratio of men to women was over 6:1 and no children were on the ships list. (Document C) Nuclear families were not desirable or the intention for the Chesapeake region. On the contrary, the colonists in New England region settled because they were in search of a place to create the perfect religion. Originating from the Netherlands and venturing to New England due to religious repression, the Puritans, as they were called, established their families and lives in the colony. Young...
